Introduction: Understanding Your Key Accounts

Please login for access. Login

This month is all about understanding your key accounts. Before you can create strategies that deliver real results, you need to dig into the details—where your client has been, where they’re headed, and what’s holding them back. Think of it as laying the foundation for everything you’ll do in the months ahead.

We’ve broken this into four weekly lessons that focus on specific areas of your account. Each lesson will take no more than an hour to complete—less if you’re focused. You can do one lesson a week, spread it out over the month, or tackle all four in a single session if that works better for you. The pace is up to you. What matters most is persevering and completing the steps.

The Weekly Steps

Here’s what we’ll cover this month:

Week 1: Deep Dive into Account History

You’ll start by researching your client’s history—key milestones, big wins, and relationship highlights. This will help you understand how they’ve evolved and what that means for your strategy moving forward.

Week 2: Identify Industry Trends

Next, you’ll explore two big trends shaping their industry. This will give you insight into the challenges and opportunities they’re likely to face—and how you can help.

Week 3: Understand Client Values and Culture

In Week 3, you’ll align yourself with what matters most to your client—their mission, values, and organizational culture. This is how you build trust and strengthen your partnership.

Week 4: Identify Key Pain Points

Finally, you’ll uncover their biggest challenges by talking to stakeholders and gathering feedback. By understanding their pain points, you can position yourself as the problem-solver they need.

Why We’re Doing This

This month isn’t about jumping straight into solving problems. It’s about gathering the insights you need to make smarter decisions. When you invest the time to understand your key accounts at a deeper level, you’ll:

  • Build trust by showing you truly understand your clients’ needs.
  • Uncover opportunities you might have missed otherwise.
  • Create strategies that feel customized and meaningful to your clients.

This is the groundwork for a stronger, more productive year ahead.

How to Approach This

  • Find a Schedule That Works for You:
Whether it’s dedicating one hour each week, tackling two lessons in one sitting, or even spreading this across a few weekends—it’s your choice.
  • Consistency Over Perfection:
What matters most is sticking with it. If you can’t find an hour one week, take 15 minutes and make progress. Every step counts.
  • Take It at Your Own Pace:
Life happens. You don’t need to follow the schedule perfectly—just persevere and make sure you complete each lesson by the end of the month.
