- Don’t follow your passion. Passions are usually hobbies, not meaningful work or education. Most of us can’t earn a living from passions. When you become better at what you do, you get a sense of accomplishment. You’re also rewarded with more control over how you do your work, because you’ve earned trust. You need to get good at your job to earn valuable skills that you can exchange for more control.
- Be so good they can’t ignore you. Focus on difficult activities that stretch your abilities and close skill gaps. Don’t do the stuff you enjoy and comes easily, do the things that are challenging or that you don’t especially like.
- The importance of control. Control over what you do and how you do it increases happiness, engagement and fulfilment. It’s an essential factor in creating work you love. You’ll only get that control if people trust that you do good work.
- The importance of a mission. A career mission keeps you focused on goals that maximise your impact. But those potential ideas lie at the cutting edge of what you do. Only once you have mastered your niche will you see the possibilities. Find ways to get your mission in front of others and inspire them to talk about them.
