So you’ve become good at what you do and what you do is valuable. What happens after you’ve accumulated your career capital?

The power of a mission

A mission provides a unifying focus for your career because you dedicate your energy toward useful goals that maximise your impact.

Career missions are are like scientific breakthroughs. They’re innovations waiting to be discovered at the edge of what’s possible in your field.

But first you must be good enough to get to the cutting edge. It’s the only place these missions become visible. Master your niche (even if it takes years) and only then turn your attention to seeking a mission.

To get there is hard work. The kind of work most of us avoid in our careers.

Missions require little bets.

When you discover your mission, you must go after it. They require little bets: small and achievable projects to explore the possibilities surrounding your ideas.

They either succeed or fail, but either way you get important feedback to guide your next steps.

Don’t invest all your effort into one big bold idea where everything hinges on its success.

Missions require marketing

Whatever mission you choose, needs to attract the attention of others. You want to inspire them to talk about it. Which means you need a channel through which you can make conversations about your mission easier.

How will you get your mission the support it deserves?
